Addressing Water Ingress Challenges in Shellharbour
A homeowner in Shellharbour encountered a pressing issue with water ingress that worsened over time. Rainwater from two adjacent properties, positioned at a higher elevation, began to flow into the yard and seep beneath the foundation of the house. This unwelcome water intrusion caused damage to the flooring, contributed to rising damp, and triggered mould growth within the property, jeopardising the integrity of recent renovations.

What Methods Can You Use to Identify Water Ingress Sources?
The water ingress issue originated from both surface runoff and subsurface water flowing downhill from the rear and side yards of neighbouring properties. The absence of a comprehensive drainage system meant that water was forced to flow beneath the house.
Developing an Effective Drainage Solution
CS Plumbing devised and installed a gravity-fed French drain system specifically designed to capture and redirect water before it could compromise the home's foundation.
The project encompassed several crucial components:
- A French drain system expertly designed to collect both surface and subsurface water from neighbouring properties, directing it through gravity to a concrete pit.
- A 100mm PVC pipe extending from the pit to the curb, featuring strategically drilled holes in the curb to ensure efficient water discharge.
- Three new, larger-diameter Colorbond metal downpipes that replaced the original smaller pipes, connected to new 100mm PVC piping leading to the curb.
- A retaining wall system constructed along the boundary, utilising concrete sleepers and galvanised steel posts, with auger holes drilled using an excavator to create a robust barrier to hold back the adjacent yard.
- Efficient soil removal conducted on-site, facilitated by a dumper for effective site management.
What Actions Can You Take for Effective Water Management?
The newly installed drainage system now effectively captures both surface and subsurface water at the property boundary, ensuring it is diverted away from the home. This solution offers the homeowner a reliable, low-maintenance option that protects their foundation, flooring, and the investment made in renovations.
