RESOLVING COMMON INSTALLATION CHALLENGES WITH BABY GATES
CRUCIAL INSTALLATION DISCLAIMER
These installations require a specific skill set; attempting this task without the assistance of a professional could lead to potential hazards and unexpected expenses.
By engaging with this article, you acknowledge that you have read and accepted the terms and conditions specified here: Website Terms & Conditions.
The following examples highlight various challenges I have encountered during installations, which may reflect your own experience and offer practical solutions.
INSTALLATION CHALLENGE 1: DEALING WITH UNEVEN SURFACES
ADDRESSING THE ISSUE OF AN UNEVEN SURFACE

-
- Measure the widest point at the top to determine the size needed for the gate and any extensions required. (CLICK HERE FOR MEASURING GUIDELINES).
- Once you possess the gates/extensions, use an angle grinder equipped with a metal/aluminium disc to cut the gate accurately, following the measurements illustrated in the reference images above.
- Remove the plastic component from the section you plan to cut out and insert it into the adjusted part of the gate to ensure proper fitting of the tension knob.
- This process will become clearer once you have the gate on hand.
INSTALLATION CHALLENGE 2: MOUNTING ON A SKEW WALL
OVERCOMING THE CHALLENGE OF MOUNTING ON A SKEW WALL

STEPS TO FOLLOW:
-
- Ensure that the gate/extensions are prepped for installation.
- Use Pratley Putty Quickset to fill any gaps and establish a level surface on the wall.
- Allow the Putty to fully cure BEFORE tightening the tension knobs to securely attach the gate using pressure.
- Do not rely on the gate for safety until all procedures are complete and the gate has been tested for stability.
INSTALLATION CHALLENGE 3: INSTALLING BABY GATES OUTDOORS
CONFRONTING THE CHALLENGE OF OUTDOOR BABY GATE INSTALLATION
While installing baby gates outdoors might seem like a cost-effective and quick solution, it can potentially void the warranty of these gates.

I recommend considering outdoor installations of baby gates as a temporary and economical solution. This could risk voiding your warranty on the gates.
-
- Baby gates are specifically designed for indoor use and are not suitable for outdoor conditions due to potential exposure to severe weather.
- This limitation is clearly stated in the warranty documentation that accompanies the product.
- Failure to comply with warranty terms will result in the loss of warranty coverage.
For a long-lasting solution, consider hiring a contractor who specialises in security or latch gates. While this may entail higher costs, it is the most effective approach.
PREPARING THE BABY GATE AND EXTENSIONS FOR OUTDOOR USE:
Disclaimer: None of these measures guarantee complete rust protection; however, they aim to extend the lifespan of the gate in South African weather conditions.
Regular treatment every month or two can significantly reduce the risk of rust.
To minimise rust and moisture accumulation, adhere to these guidelines:
-
- Before installation, treat the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit, ensuring to cover the base areas as well.
- Drill holes at the bottom of the gate using an 8mm steel drill bit. This will allow water to drain and prevent rust from forming inside the hollow gate, where moisture may collect at joints, connectors, and tension knobs. The holes will enhance ventilation to prevent moisture build-up.
- Apply a light coating of Rustoleum Painters Touch 2X Ultra Cover – Satin Clear 340g, available at takealot.com, to the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit.
- Allow to dry thoroughly (approximately 2 hours), then apply a second coat.
For existing rust:
-
- Spray the affected areas with Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer 291g, following the product guidelines.
- Consult the product description on takealot.com; you may need to acquire mineral spirits to clean any overspray on non-rusted areas.
- The rust reformer will convert rust to a black colour, which should then be coated with Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Enamel Gloss White 340g, available on takealot.com.
